"Labour Migration for Integration and Development in Africa"

ILO conducted three research studies on West, North and East African countries aimed at assisting governments and social partners to address the fundamental building blocks of effective policy and practice to regulate labour migration. Understanding that good policy depends on good data, this study assesses the current state of data collection and suggests specific measures to improve and harmonize collection and analysis of statistical data on labour migration and to more effectively use it in policy and administration. 

World Bank project "Measuring Migraton: Best Practices"

The Development Research Group at the World Bank is drawing up best practice principles for measuring migration in censuses and household surveys. The intention is to use these leassons learned in the Bank's own assistance to countries, as well as to spread them around the global research and policy community more generally through papers, seminars etc.

Publication: "Measuring the Economic Impact of Immigration: A scoping paper"

The study attempts to measure various economic impacts of immigration on New Zealand. For those impacts where evidence or methods are currently lacking, the study draws on findings from international research that are also likely to apply to New Zealand to make an estimate of what the relationship might be, as well as suggesting a research strategy to fill the gaps in the long-run.

Publication: "Migration, Remittances and Development"

This publication presents the current situation with regard to the magnitude and economic impact of migrants’ remittances to their countries of origin.

The book surveys:

  • the channels used to collect these funds;
  • the role of banking systems and other financial institutions;
  • the introduction of new technologies and their impact on fund collection;
  • how the funds are transferred; and
  • how to reduce the costs.

"Push and Pull Factors of International Migration"

This is a report on the joint Eurostat-NIDI project aimed at studying the push and pull factors determining international migration flows. The objective of the project is to improve understanding of the direct and indirect causes and mechanisms of international migration to the European Union, from an internationally comparative perspective. The results are intended to serve as a basis for the development of policy instruments and to provide tools for estimating future migration.

Research project: "Development on the Move: Measuring and Optimising the Economic and Social Impacts of Migration"

"Development on the Move" is a ground-breaking global research project gathering new qualitative and quantitative data about migration’s development impacts. The project aims to comprehensively assess how migration affects development in a number of different countries around the world, and how policy can maximise migration’s development benefits and minimise its costs. It is a joint project of the Global Development Network (GDN) and the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), UK.

Migration and Remittances for Development in Africa Project

This project was undertaken by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Africa Region and Development Prospects Group at the World Bank with the objective of examining the incidence and impacts of migration and remittances across sub-Saharan Africa, a region where relatively little is known about migration trends and the impact of remittances upon development.

Migration Dialogue for West Africa (MIDWA)

The Migration Dialogue for West Africa or MIDWA was designed as a platform to encourage the Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss, in a regional context, such common migration issues and concerns for which immediate solutions may not be forthcoming at a national level. Its objective is to promote and ensure high quality cooperation among ECOWAS Member States, third countries and other international consultative forums on Free Movement and migration by:

Free Movement in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group of fifteen countries, founded in 1975. Its mission is to promote economic integration in "all fields of economic activity, particularly industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial questions, social and cultural matters .....".

ECOWAS has introduced the ECOWAS Passport and APEC has put in place an APEC-visa for certain categories of people to facilitate their movement in these groupings' member States.
