Market Research Units (Bangladesh)

In Bangladesh the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) has worked with the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment and IOM to create Market Research Units (MRUs) in receiving countries. The MRUs are responsible for gathering information on labour market needs in recruiting countries and to report these to BMET so that they can be taken into account when developing future training and educational programs.

Colombo Process

The Colombo Process is a Regional Consultative Process on the management of overseas employment and contractual labour for countries of origins in Asia. According to best estimates, over 2.5 million Asian workers leave their countries every year under contract to work abroad. A large proportion of workers from South and Southeast Asia head for the Gulf States to perform various types of service, trade and construction jobs, while others move to North America, Europe and Asian countries.

Work in Freedom Programme: Collaborative Action Programme to Prevent Trafficking of Women and Girls in South Asia (2013 - 2018)

A five-year, technical cooperation programme with a targeted approach for the trafficking of women and girls from South Asia. The objective is to reach 100,000 women and girls in major South Asian countries and major destination countries of South Asian workers for an overall reduction of incidences.

Promoting Decent Work through Improved Migration Policy and its Application in Bangladesh

The “Promoting Decent Work through Improved Migration Policy and its Application in Bangladesh” project was initiated on a request from the Government of Bangladesh to the International Labour Organization (ILO) to assist the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment (MEWOE) and the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) to improve the overall management of labour migration and to ensure protection and decent employment conditions to the Bangladeshi migrant workers.

Wage Earner's Welfare Fund for Migrant Workers

The Welfare Fund for Migrant Workers ensures the welfare of migrant workers through pre-departure briefings, a welfare desk at the airport and language skills training for nurses, garment workers and hotel staff. This fund was created in 1990. The Wage Earners' Welfare Fund (WEWF) is a single trust fund pooled from the mandatory membership contributions of migrant workers, investment and interest income on these funds, and income from other sources. The WEWF's main purpose is to ensure the welfare of migrant workers by financing various activities.

Ministry of Expatriate Welfare & Overseas Employment

The Ministry of Expatriates Welfare & Overseas Employment was established in 2001 by the Government of Bangladesh with the main objective to ensure the welfare of expatriate workers and enhance overseas employment. As a new institution, the Bureau of Manpower, Employment & Training (BMET) is currently the Ministry's only active unit. The objective BMET is to create new overseas employment opportunities through the global market. BMET ensures the welfare for the overseas employees and helps them directly to search works in the various countries of the world.

Probasi Kaylan Bank

The Expatriates Welfare Bank Act of 2010 established the Probasi Kaylan Bank in Bangladesh, a specialised bank that provides collateral-free easy loans to aspirant migrant workers, as well as expatriates and returnees for investments and self-employment.
