Words into Action guidelines – Disaster displacement: How to reduce risk, address impacts and strengthen resilience

The Words into Action guide offers practical guidance to help government authorities integrate disaster displacement and other related forms of human mobility into regional, national, sub-national and local DRR strategies in accordance with Target (E) of the Sendai Framework, to revise or develop DRR strategies by 2020. It provides basic background information and highlights the various roles DRR and DRM can play in reducing, preparing for and responding to disaster displacement.

Early Warnings for All initiative (EW4All)

The UN Secretary-General launched in March 2022, the Early Warnings for All initiative which called for every person on Earth to be protected by early warning systems within five years by 2027. 

In November 2022, the UN Secretary-General launched at COP27 an Executive Action Plan to implement the initiative and designated as the co-leads the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). 

Centre of Excellence for Diaspora Studies

In 2023, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the University of Ibadan (UI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Diaspora Studies.  The Centre is to serve as Africa Diaspora Resource Research Centre, and it will be managed by the Diaspora and Transnational Studies Unit of the Institute of African Studies.

Making Migration Safe for Women programme

The overarching goal of the Making Migration Safe for Women programme, implemented by UN Women, is to ensure that migration is safe for women migrating from, into and through Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali and Niger and international norms and standards for protecting and promoting migrant women’s rights are strengthened.

UN Women guidance document on the development of a survey instrument on the situation of migrant women at the country level

This UN Women guidance document was developed based on a gender-responsive survey instrument conducted by UN Women, together with the National Statistics Service of Niger and IOM Niger, in Niger in 2023 for collecting and analysing gender data in migration, as part of UN Women’s Making Migration Safe for Women Programme. 

The guidance is organized into three main sections:

  • Why a survey on the situation of migrant women?
  • Survey objectives and methodology
  • The four stages of developing and implementing the survey

National Labour Migration Policy for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is destination, transit and largely sending country for labour migrants to countries in Southern Africa and further afield. Labour migration in Zimbabwe has been characterized by many challenges, including brain drain, irregular migration, lack of a mechanism for social protection of migrant workers and lack of up-to-date statistics on labour migration.
