The Foresight Global Environmental Migration

The Foresight Global Environmental Migration project will explore the global patterns and impacts of migration over the next 50 years arising from environmental change, the opportunities and challenges which could result from changing migration patterns, and a suite of interventions appropriate in each circumstance. The interaction between migration, environmental change and development is a core component of this research.

Global Program Migration and Development

The Section Global Programme Migration and Development is a thematically oriented unit that makes use of its operational activities to make a contribution to finding a solution to the global challenges linked to labour migration, internally displaced persons, refugees, and victims of trafficking in human beings. It supports programmes on these themes both financially and by providing know-how, while contributing its experiences within the scope of multilateral dialogue on migration.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9th January every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, returned to India from South Africa, led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever.

The High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora

The Indian government, tasked a High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora to analyze the location, situation and potential development role of the estimated 20 million non-resident Indians (NRI's) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO's).

The information resulting from this two-year exercise led to a new direction in diaspora policy, including the creation of a Ministry for Overseas Indian Affairs in 2004.

Electronic database for candidate migrant workers

As a result of the AENEAS 2006 Labour Migration Project for West Africa, the Labour Migration Unit established a database for candidate migrant workers at the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare of Ghana. Through this and a series of targeted training workshops, the foundation has been laid for the establishment of a job-matching scheme between Ghana and Italy as well as circular migration schemes involving other EU Member States and Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Meeting the Challenge: A Mid-term Report on Achieving MDG-1 in Bangladesh

The report prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from relevant government ministries, agencies, NGOs and the UN Country Team, presents a comprehensive review of the progress we have made in reducing poverty and hunger.  This report gives special prominence to facilitating international migration. It acknowledges there are compelling evidences that international migration - through remittances, the transfer of social capital and diaspora linkages - can positively contribute to alleviate poverty.

Assessing the Evidence: Environment, Climate Change and Migration in Bangladesh

The study brings together existing evidence on the climate change, environment and migration nexus in Bangladesh. The evidence in the document comes from a wide variety of sources and studies, including Government of Bangladesh statistics and policy documents, academic research, working papers and other publications and research carried out by national, bilateral and multilateral organizations, NGOs and research institutions.

INADI - National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism

The Argentinean National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism, is an organ of the Government that promotes different initiatives in order to promote more inclusive policies. They have produced a Discrimination Map of Argentina and organised community workshops.

Job Fair

The Romanian Ministry of Labour, Family and Equal Opportunities, through its National Agency for Employment has held several Job Fair events in Spain and Italy. These initiatives seem to be easier to set up and work better when they are organized at the bilateral rather than at the multilateral level.
