Hiring initiative at Glen Haven Manor

One of the largest long-term care facilities in Nova Scotia, Glen Haven Manor, was the first to be a part of the Economic Mobility Pathways Project (EMPP), which was designed to help refugees find employment in Canada.

Recently, Glen Haven recruited 15 continuing care assistants from Kenya and Jordan through EMPP. The facility is also working with community partners to formalize a recruitment, training and retention program for newcomer continuing care assistants that can be used by other care organizations

Using technology to improve recruitment practices

This programme between the governments of India and the United Arab Emirates links the electronic emigration and immigration systems of the two respective governments, with the objective of reducing contract substitution and improving government oversight over recruitment practices. The process for implementation has been made available to other ADD Member States for replication, as well as to the wider GFMD community through the Platform for Partnerships.

Towards a Holistic Approach to Labour Migration Governance and Labour Mobility in North Africa (THAMM)

Designed as a regional programme, THAMM supports national institutions to draft and implement policies and mechanisms for safe, orderly and regular migration, as well as fostering cooperation and regional exchange between relevant stakeholders in North Africa. It will also develop and pilot mobility schemes, in particular for young women and men in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, who are interested in a dual vocational education training in Germany, or for skilled workers seeking recognition of their qualifications to start working in Germany.

Social marketing tool

Together with the Philippines Overseas Employment Administration, ICMPD (under the MIEUX initiative) deployed this social marketing tool in attempting to influence the behaviour of different segments of the population (young people, students, women, would-be migrants, etc.) in relation to a campaign on trafficking and illegal recruitment. Social marketing campaigns are designed to influence the target group’s actions and adopt a new behaviour or change a current behaviour which affects the target group in a negative way.

 

Mainstreaming the General Principles and Operational Guidelines for Fair Recruitment

The ILO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Fruit and Vegetable Alliance (AHIFORES) to carry out joint work on mainstreaming the General Principles and Operational Guidelines for Fair Recruitment in Mexico. They inded to cooperate on the certification scheme "DEAR", as well as developing a tool box to address recruitment practices in horticulture and vegetable supply chains in partnership with Verité.

Partnership on Ethical Labour Recruitment

OM, the UN Migration Agency, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the ethical recruitment of Filipino workers between the Philippines and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The agreement will involve pilot testing the International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS).

The agreement was signed on 8 June 2018 by IOM, the Ministry of Service of Alberta, the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety of Saskatchewan and the Department of Labor and Employment of the Republic of the Philippines.

Bilateral Agreement between Nepal and Malaysia on the Recruitment, Employment, and Repatriation of Workers

In October 2018, Nepal signed a labour agreement with Malaysia, the preferred job destination for Nepali migrant workers.

Nepali Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista and Malaysian Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Recruitment, Employment, and Repatriation of Workers amidst a special function in the Capital.

Minimum monthly wage of a Nepali overseas- worker

The government of Nepal is revising the minimum wage set for workers in the country. According to a source at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, a worker shall get paid at least Rs 13,450 a month from 17 July 2019 (revised up from the previous minimum of Rs 9,700). 

The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security Minimum made this decision following a recommendation of the Wage Fixation Committee. The Ministry says the workers benefit from Rs 2,500 in addition to their wage as part of their ‘social security’ under the Social Security Act.
