France

The MTM Interactive Map on Migration (i-Map) is an online interactive platform in support of the Mediterranean Migration Dialogue.

The country profiles provide factual, non-analytical information and a series of graphs illustrating the main datasets relevant to Migration and Development in the country.

The profiles give access to a plethora of information sources through hyperlinks and they cover the following thematic areas:

France

The immigration situation in France has been strongly influenced to the present day by the legacy of colonialism of earlier centuries as well as the long tradition of recruiting foreign workers. Overall, there has been a steady increase in immigration over the last century, and this has had a strong impact on the nature of French society. Although immigration has been regarded as a success story in economic terms, in the past three decades it has increasingly been perceived as the root of social problems.

Co-development through French Youth Associations

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

The French Co-development program introduces the idea of “supporting initiatives by young people of immigrant origin”, a policy that enables youth associations of immigrant descent and youth associations in the parents’ countries of origin to be co-financed for socio-cultural activities that are deployed on both territories.

These projects should foster citizenship and socio-economic integration in France, and contribute to development initiatives in the regions of departure.

The Economic Initiatives and Migration Programme (Programme Migrations et Initiatives Economiques)

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

The Economic Initiatives and Migration Programme, or Programme Migrations et Initiatives Economiques (PMIE) in French, aims to facilitate the implementation of economic projects by migrants both in their country of origin and in France.

Bilateral seasonal migration program between France and Morocco

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

The seasonal foreign worker programme aims to facilitate circular migration, provides employers with regulations and guidelines on their obligations and ensures the protection of migrant workers' rights. The programme focuses on origin countries with which France has concluded bilateral agreements: Tunisia, Morocco, and Poland.

Migration and Development (France - Mali)

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

This practice facilitates the investments of individual Malians or Malian Diaspora associations in France in local community development projects or enterprise creation in Mali. Participation in this programme by Malian migrants in France is not conditional on permanent return.

This programme addresses all aspects of migration, including annual consultations between France and Mali and twinning arrangements between villages.

Development Marketplace for the African Diaspora in Europe (D-MADE)

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

The Development Marketplace for the African Diaspora in Europe (D-MADE) is a competitive grant program aimed at funding innovative, small scale development projects which are profit-making, results-oriented and have the potential to be scaled up or replicated.

The program has two components:

The European Job Mobility Portal (EURES)

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

Launched in 1994, EURES is a European cooperation network of employment services, designed to facilitate the free movement of workers. The network has always worked hard to ensure that European citizens can benefit from the same opportunities, despite language barriers, cultural differences, bureaucratic challenges, diverse employment laws and a lack of recognition of educational certificates across Europe.

This web portal provides information on access to job opportunities in 32 European countries. It also promotes the cooperation amongst national employment agencies.

Migration and Development Policies and Practices: A mapping study of eleven European countries and the European Commission

Submitted by Mr. Dário Muhamudo on

This study has three objectives:

1) analyze migration and development in Europe;

2) provide input for continued policy discussions on migration and development beyond Europe, and;

3) assist states in identifying possible future directions, as well as common ground for addressing migration as an inherent part of development.
