IOM, the UN Migration Agency, launched the MigrantApp (MigApp) in 2017, the first pilot of an IOM global initiative to provide information to facilitate regular, safe, and orderly migration using mobile devices.

Universal access or extend social protection coverage

Numerous public services have adjusted to provide universal access or extend social protection coverage to an increasingly diverse population through bilateral and multilateral social security agreements or unilateral measures.

One mechanism for extending social protection and paving the way for universal coverage is the establishment of social protection floors – nationally defined sets of basic social security guarantees that ensure at a minimum, that over a lifetime, all those in need have access to essential health care and to basic income security.

Social innovation initiatives

Social innovation initiatives have been launched in many countries to find solutions to local challenges involving migrants, refugees and host communities in social entrepreneurship ventures.

Numerous programs empower young people to identify challenges in their communities and to create entrepreneurial solutions to address these barriers. Through a combination of training, mentorship and in some cases seed funding, youth learn transferable skills to become social innovators and entrepreneurs.

"I am a migrant" IOM campaign

The IOM's 'I am a migrant' campaign is a platform to promote diversity and inclusion of migrants in society. It’s specifically designed to support volunteer groups, local authorities, companies, associations, groups, indeed, anyone of goodwill who is concerned about the hostile public discourse against migrants.

Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative

The Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative (GRSI) is a joint initiative led by the Government of Canada; the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); the Open Society Foundations; the Giustra Foundation; and the University of Ottawa, which works to share good practices and support the creation of new programs to assit countries around the world to open new pathways for refugee protection through community sponsorship programs.

NGO Committee on Migration

Established in 2006, the NGO Committee on Migration is a committee of non-governmental organisations, which has consultative status with the ECOSOC. The Committee brings together over 50 NGOs who seek to realize justice for migrants, refugees, stateless persons, internally displaced persons, and trafficked persons. 

The World Refugee Day

Every year on 20 June, UNHCR leads the celebration of World Refugee Day. The Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe, and offers a chance to raise awareness of the plight of refugees around the world and of the efforts to protect their human rights.
