Promotion of Decent Work Opportunities for the Economic Empowerment of Vulnerable Segments of Society

Decent Work is a measure to reduce poverty and inequalities in the society. This project proposed three distinct sets of interventions to promote decent work opportunities in Pakistan for vulnerable groups including Child and Bonded Labourers in Brick Kiln Sector, Social Protection; and engaging Pakistani diaspora in Italy.

Governance of Labour Migration in South and South-East Asia (GOALS)

The Project is conceived in response to various facets of labour migration, fair and ethical recruitment and sustainable reintegration, gaps and challenges relating to safe, orderly and regular labour migration and improved skills recognition, in the corridors between South and South-East Asia and the Middle East. Providing regular pathways from crisis to safety - Pakistan

In line with Pakistan’s policy on ‘Voluntary repatriation and management of Afghan nationals’, the Government of Pakistan registered around 880,000 undocumented Afghans in 2017-2018. This registration aimed to provide better protection to the undocumented Afghan nationals living in Pakistan, enable them to safely return to their country of origin, obtain legal travel documents, benefit from the visa policy of Pakistan towards Afghan nationals and contribute to the development of their country of origin as well as destination as regular migrants.

Numerous programs encourage links between schools and communities to foster social inclusion of children and their families. For instance, in the Netherlands for second-generation Turks and Moroccans; in Pakistan for Hazara girls; in Canada among African and Caribbean-born immigrants; and in the US for Latin America and Vietnamese communities.

Digitalizing migrant worker's remittances

This highly innovative project works to digitize migrant workers’ remittances both in Malaysia and in countries of origin through e-wallets (wallet-based mobile-enabled remittance system), thus providing remittance recipients access to additional financial services that meet their needs. It aims to link mobile-enabled remittances with digital financial services offered by third parties at the receiving end in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)

Pakistan and China are engaged in a partnership to build China-Pakistan Economic Corridors (CPEC) which aims to enhance connectivity between the two countries through building up of highways and railroads. The goal is to spur economic activity for the mutual benefit of both Pakistan and China as well as for the entire region. 

Pakistan Remittance Initiative

The Pakistan Remittance Initiative (PRI) was launched in 2009 by the State Bank of Pakistan, the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and the Ministry of Finance for the purpose of (a) facilitating and supporting a faster, cheaper, convenient and more efficient flow of remittances, and (b) to create investment opportunities in Pakistan for overseas Pakistanis. The PRI has encouraged the financial sector to provide greater commitment to remittance services.

Colombo Process

The Colombo Process is a Regional Consultative Process on the management of overseas employment and contractual labour for countries of origins in Asia. According to best estimates, over 2.5 million Asian workers leave their countries every year under contract to work abroad. A large proportion of workers from South and Southeast Asia head for the Gulf States to perform various types of service, trade and construction jobs, while others move to North America, Europe and Asian countries.

Promoting Effective Governance of Labour Migration from South Asia

The project works with Nepal's Ministry of Labour and Pakistan's Ministry of Human Resources to promote well-managed labour migration from South Asia. It works to ensure effective protection of the rights of vulnerable migrant workers and enhance the development impact of labour migration and reduce irregular flows. Specific objetives include:

a) providing reliable information on overseas employment opportunities and capacity building for job matching;
