Empowerment and Rights of Migrants

Since 2015, the International Labour Organization and its partners have organized an annual Global Media Competition to recognize exemplary media coverage on labour migration and fair recruitment.

Recognizing and promoting ethical and quality reporting is increasingly significant, as media can promote a toxic public narrative reinforcing prejudice, intolerance and stigmatization against migrant workers and their families.

The Global Media Competition contributes to support the production of quality reporting and raising awareness about labour migration.

The FAIRWAY programme addresses underlying causes of decent work deficits at their source through national-level interventions in selected countries of origin in East, West and North Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and Morocco). In the Arab States, the programme provides continuity to interventions in countries of destination across the region by building on the work of the Fairway Middle East project (2016-2019), which target low-skilled migrant workers from all regions.

The project ëLiving together without discriminationí ? implemented by the National Human Rights Council and the Moroccan Government ? intends to strengthen instruments and public policies to fight and prevent racism, discrimination and xenophobia towards the migrant population.

The Welcoming San José Plan is a community-derived set of 23 strategies across four core pillars which aim to facilitate and accelerate immigrant inclusion in civic, economic, linguistic, and social aspects of life in San José and ensure that immigrants and refugees are engaged, respected, and have opportunities to reach their fullest potential.

The City of Montreal is recognised as a metropolis of immigration. However, it is structurally lagging behind in the professional integration of newcomers. In this respect, in 2021 Montreal still had a higher unemployment rate gap between newcomers and native-born people than in other Canadian cities. In response to this challenge, in 2019 the City of Montreal launched "Montreal Inclusive at Work", an innovative initiative to promote the professional integration of immigrants in Montreal, encouraging their hiring, integration, retention and progression in employment.

As a follow-up to the pilot on the equity impact of job growth tied to green investments realized with C40 Cities in 2021, the City of Milan will launch a second phase of the project aiming to develop a flagship programme on public housing retrofits and construction. This will help the city to move from data collection and analysis to policy making, delivering equitably distributed green jobs through climate action implementation. Mexico City is a recipient of the Global Cities Fund, the Mayors Migration Council’s response to the unmet needs of cities as they support migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people.
