Presidential Regulation on the management of refugees

In 2016, the Goverment of Indonesia adopted a presidential regulation on the management of refugees from other countries. The Regulation states that the Government works with UNHCR and IOM in managing refugees in Indonesia.

Under the Perpres, the handling of refugees is coordinated by the Minister (which deals with political, legal, and security affairs). The coordination is in the formulation of policies including: a. Discovery; b. Shelter; c. Security; and d. Immigration Supervision.

Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs)

Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) are a mechanism through which CIC supports the development of community-based partnerships and planning around the needs of newcomers.

LIPs seek to engage various stakeholders in a locally-driven strategic planning process including employers, school boards, health centres and networks, boards of trade, levels of government, professional associations, ethno-cultural and faith-based organizations, and the community and social services sectors.

Intersectoral Working Group for Migration Management

Peru has an Intersectoral Working Group for Migration Management (MTIGM), created by Supreme Decree No. 067-2011-PCM and led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to 22 sectors of public administration that comprise it. This mechanism has a Coordination Commission with Civil Society Institutions made up of the following entities:

Groups of Five – Sponsoring Refugees

A Group of Five (G5) is five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have arranged to sponsor a refugee recognized by either the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or a foreign state to come to Canada. The five individuals act as guarantors that the necessary support will be provided for the full duration of the sponsorship. They provide additional opportunities for refugees living abroad to find protection and build a new life in Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program.



Support the entrepreneurship of young people with the help of the diaspora

The CSO Regional Development Agencies of Morazán and La Unión in El Salvador worked with some municipalities and diaspora in the US to support youth in starting up their own businesses and cooperatives, which included access to social finance.

This case study draws on good practice from projects supported by the UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI) in El Salvador and explores how to establish youth-led businesses at the local level, with support from the diaspora, as a vehicle to promote local development and provide alternatives to irregular migration.

Diversity Charter

Inspired by the diversity agenda set by the city of London for the 2012 Olympic Games, as well as the seminal French Charte de la diversité, now replicated in Germany and Spain, the city of Copenhagen developed a Diversity Charter that seeks to actively engage the business community in the work of making Copenhagen “must inclusive city in Europe.”

The Diversity Charter and its Diversity Board are central to the Engage in Copenhagen campaign. Signatories ‘affirm’ the three guiding principles than inform the Copenhagen approach govern the campaign:
