FERME Seasonal Movement of Agri Workers

Guatemala has been able to negotiate, through the Quebec Farmers Association "Ferme" large seasonal movements of agricultural workers under Canada's universal temporary foreign worker visa category. The program has been evaluated as highly successful in terms of almost 100% assured returns, high remittances, 20% female intake and improved family welfare back home.

Temporary Protected Status Programme (TPS)

The United States Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately.  USCIS may grant TPS to eligible nationals of certain countries (or parts of countries), who are already in the United States.  Eligible individuals without nationality who last resided in the designated country may also be granted TPS, due to the following temporary conditions in the

Working Holiday Maker Scheme

The Working Holiday Maker visa (subclass 417) is a temporary visa for young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. It is a temporary visa that encourages cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and eligible countries. 

It fills critical jobs during harvesting and picking seasons and provides a large and mobile workforce that helps meet seasonal demand for agricultural workers. They also provide labour for jobs for which natives are hard to find in rural and remote areas. 

Skilled Migration Points Test

The Skilled Migration Points Test aims to identify skilled migrants and also provides skills/qualification recognition. The Skillselect system is points based, with applicants receiving points for criteria ranging from Age to work experience. Applicants must score a minimum of 60 points for their visa to be granted. The following tables give a detailed breakdown of how points are awarded for Skillselect visas.

 

OPT program - Optional Practical Training

The OPT program is a broad opportunity that is available to graduates in any field and provides a visa to stay 12 months in the United States after graduation. The US is a top destination for studying sciences, technology, engineering and math, the STEM fields. And as part of a particular effort around those fields, the US has expanded access to the OPT program for those in the STEM fields for an additional seventeen months beyond the initial twelve month for the prior program.

College Assistant Migrant Program

College assistant migrant program helps students who are migratory seasonal farm workers enroll in their first year of undergraduate university studies. Those projects include services like visits to employers and graduate programs, vocation exploration and internships. And then to supplement primary education for refugee kids. The US Department for Health and Human Services provides grants to help refugee children to improve their academic performance and adjust and integrate.

Medical Training Inititative

The medical training initiative accommodates overseas post-graduate medical specialists to undertake a fixed period of training in the UK for up to two years. This is a temporary route and it seeks to promote circular migration so that participants in a particular scheme could return to their home country and apply the skills and knowledge developed during that time in the UK. 



The MTI scheme allows International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to come to the UK for a maximum of 2 years to train within the National Health Service (NHS).

Council of Heads of Migration
