Micronesia

Micronesians have been migrating for more than a millennium. The first Micronesians moved into the islands by canoe, some from the East and some from the West. They settled throughout the 100 or so inhabited islands in what became the Federated States of Micronesia, subsisting on small-scale agriculture and food from the ocean. They developed about 10 languages and many dialects over time. The population increased throughout the 1900s to about 107,000 in 2000, doubling since 1980; after that, it has been decreasing.

Nigeria

Migration has become an increasingly important issue affecting many countries, and it is important for accurate and reliable migration data to be produced by government to inform policy making. In Nigeria, the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Migration and Development, consisting of different government ministries, was established during the process of developing the profile to ensure ownership of the whole process of production and usage of the data.

Republic of Moldova

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission to the Republic of Moldova presents the third edition of the Extended Migration Profile (EMP) of the Republic of Moldova for 2008–2013. This report is edited and published under the project “Supporting the implementation of the migration and development component of the EU–Republic of Moldova Mobility Partnership and harnessing its benefits for the residents of the Transnistria Region of the Republic of Moldova” implemented by IOM and funded by the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.

Uganda

Migration in Uganda: A Rapid Country Profile presents information on the flows and stocks of immigrants in Uganda, Uganda emigrants and internal migrants within Uganda. The profile also analyses the impact of migration to health, the environment and the socioeconomic development of the country as well as Uganda’s main migration governance structures. Recommendations are made with regards to migration governance, mainstreaming migration into development and strengthen migration statistics.

Suriname

This migration profile for Suriname aims to offer a country-owned tool for developing and advocating an evidence-based approach to migration policymaking. Such a policy can help reduce negative migration consequences and promote positive migration impacts at the micro and macro levels. Data sources included unpublished databases from government institutions, published databases from national and international organizations, interviews with key stakeholders and existing secondary data.

Kenya

Migration in Kenya: A Country Profile provides an overview of Kenya’s migration data, trends and the country’s legal framework and governance structures as they pertain to migration. The report also describes the impact of migration on the country’s health, environment and socioeconomic development. The report can be considered a first step towards an integrated and effective migration data management framework for the country.

Malawi

This book explores migration in Malawi and discusses the most recent trends in the numbers and types of migrants, irregular migration, Malawian diaspora and remittance flows.

Afghanistan

The first Migration Profile for Afghanistan is a tool for enhancing policy coherence, evidence-based policymaking and the mainstreaming of migration into development planning. Due to security challenges and limited institutional capacities in data collection, a lack of reliable migration data poses challenges to policymakers in Afghanistan to develop appropriate migration policies and relevant migration programmes.

It provides detailed information on the migration patterns in Afghanistan with a focus on circular migration and remittances.

Republic of Moldova

This second Extended Migration Profile (EMP) Report of Moldova is a country-owned tool, prepared in consultation with a broad range of government and non-government stakeholders, to be used in enhancing policy coherence, evidence-based policy-making and mainstreaming migration into development planning. This EMP Report represents a continuation of the EMP exercise initiated by IOM Moldova in 2010.

Seychelles

Figures presented in this first Migration Profile for Seychelles demonstrate that international migration trends are rapidly changing in Seychelles, which could have an impact on the Seychelles socioeconomic profile. Statistical data are key tools for the knowledge of migration processes and the development of relevant evidence-based policies. Like in many other countries, despite its well-developed statistical systems, Seychelles lacks reliable and detailed statistics in the field of international migration.
