The Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (GAMM) is, since 2005, the overarching framework of the EU external migration and asylum policy. The framework defines how the EU conducts its policy dialogues and cooperation with non-EU countries, based on clearly defined priorities and embedded in the EU’s overall external action, including development cooperation.
The EU Communication aims to respond to EC Council's request, based on the existing policy and cooperation framework, to identify novel approaches to improve the management of legal movements of people between the EU and third countries, in order to make significant efforts to fight illegal migration.

This is a report on the joint Eurostat-NIDI project aimed at studying the push and pull factors determining international migration flows. The objective of the project is to improve understanding of the direct and indirect causes and mechanisms of international migration to the European Union, from an internationally comparative perspective. The Söderköping Process was launched in May 2001, funded by the European Union, as a cross-border cooperation process on asylum and migration and in order to respond to the new challenges that arose with the EU’s eastward enlargement. It is named after Söderköping, Sweden, where the first meeting took place on the initiative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Swedish Migration Board.
The Centre for Migration Management and Information (CIGEM - Centre d'information et Gestion des Migrations) based in Bamako, Mali, was created in 2008 through an agreement between the European Union and the Government of Mali. Its main objectives are the definition and implementation of a Malian migration policy adapted to national, regional and international dynamics in constant evolution, with particular emphasis on the link between migration and development.
