Under the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with Indonesia and the Philippines, Japan started to accept Indonesian candidates in the field of nursing and nursing care on an annual basis in fiscal 2008 and Filipino counterparts in fiscal 2009.
The agreements required such overseas candidates to undergo six-month Japanese-language training (except for those candidates already possessing a certain level of proficiency in the language).
Indonesia has decentralized its one-stop shops who provide up-front services (information, passports, medicals, visa processing, contracts, etc.) to the provincial levels to save migrants costly travel expenses.
The General Secretariat for Gender Equality (Ministry of Interior) has issued a guide for migrant women concerning their rights in the areas of work, health and social security. This also helps to sensitize officials and others to the need for equal treatment.
A special program called "Mama Learns Greek" -Learning of the Greek Language Tailor-made for Migrant Mothers helps migrant mothers both learn the language and improve their ability to help their children in school. This contributes to gender equality, the integration of mothers and children, cohesion of the family and human development of mothers and children.
This program is also part of the Annual Program of the European Integration Fund, a program that promotes linguistic skills and women’s capacity to assist their children in their schooling and life.
The Government of Germany, supports the establishment of a training and information centre in Shakhrizabz, Uzbekistan, which inter alia offers business start-up training, enhancement of entrepreneurship skills, and financial literacy courses to returning migrants and families, as well as the local unemployed.
The Governments of India, the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates launched a pilot project to test and identify best practices in managing the temporary contractual employment cycle. The lessons learned from the pilot project will form the basis for developing a comprehensive regional framework that can be carried out on a much larger scale.
The UAE Ministry of Labour and India’s Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs signed a protocol to streamline the admission of Indian contract workers by way of an electronic contract registration and validation system.
