Migration Consultation Centre (MCC)

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have begun construction of a Migration Consultation Centre (MCC) in Sunyani. The construction is part of a larger information campaign to promote safe and legal migration under IOM’s Ghana Integrated Migration Management Approach (GIMMA) project, funded by the European Union (EU). The MCC aims to facilitate and empower migrants to travel in a legal, voluntary, orderly and protected way.

Mainstreaming migration into planning at the sectoral level

Mainstreaming migration and development issues into national development planning is strategic for Jamaica as it aligns the national priority in the country’s first long-term development planning framework Vision 2030 Jamaica — National Development Plan. The Plan seeks to enable the maximization of the benefits of migration while minimizing the negative impacts.

Consular Partnership Program

In order to assist DOL in the protection of migrant workers employed in the United States and to help communicate with workers whom it might not otherwise be able to reach, DOL has established formal partnerships with the embassies of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and the Philippines. DOL’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs which coordinates the program is working to expand these partnerships to embassies and consulates of other countries.

Citizen Service (Regulation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs No.4/2008)

Based on the Presidential Instruction No. 6/2006 on Reforming the System of Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued Regulation No. 4/2008 on the establishment of a “Citizen Service” at Indonesian diplomatic representative offices abroad.

The “Citizen Service” for Indonesian citizens is part of an integrated service system that aims to improve the protection of all Indonesians, including Indonesian labour migrants. The services provided for Indonesian citizens abroad have 2 main objectives:

Resource Centers for women migrant workers

In 2010, UN Women helped the Government of Bangladesh in 2010 to establish its first Resource Center so women who wished to migrate could easily obtain correct information. Workshops and radio broadcasts have made women more aware of their rights. UN Women helped develop and broadcast a 26-episode programme on national radio in local dialects.



Pre-Departure Registration and Orientation Seminars

The Philippines has developed a comprehensive protective mechanism covering all phases of migration, which includes a mandatory orientation programme for workers who are about to leave for employment abroad. This programme seeks to facilitate workers’ smooth arrival in and adjustment to the country of destination, teaches them coping mechanisms if faced with difficulties, and to obtain other essential information to prevent welfare problems. It also includes skills-specific training for vulnerable sectors, such as domestic workers.
